How to Handle a Loose Wire on Your Braces

Posted .

One thing that can be kind of annoying is when a wire comes loose in your braces. A loose wire is usually not cause for much concern, but it can be a nuisance as it pokes your tongue, cheek or even your gums. If this happens to you, our orthodontist can get the braces repaired, but there are some things you can do yourself that can help you be more comfortable.

While it may be your first reaction, you are better off not to cut the wires. Our orthodontist has more training and experience with braces, so he can make the proper corrections and adjustments.

You can try to move the wire to a place where it is not bothering you as much. You can use an eraser on a pencil to move it. Sometimes, a wire gets stuck in a place where it is difficult to move. If this happens, then let it have its way for now. There are other things you can do.

Instead, you can try putting something between the wire and whatever it is poking to reduce discomfort. Some orthodontic wax can do the trick. If you have no orthodontic wax available, you can try putting a very small cotton ball or even a small bit of gauze on the wire for some padding.

Once you have that taken care of, you can head to Epperson Orthodontics in Springfield, Oregon, to see Dr. Matthew Epperson. We can get the braces repaired so you can focus on getting the good-looking smile you have been hoping for. In order to get in contact with us, please call 541-852-2552.
